Last year’s harsh winter put a strain on many communities’ street departments, particularly their supplies of sand and salt. Pella Public Works Director Denny Buyert says his department ordered 400 tons of salt for last winter and used 300 tons of that. The city of Pella typically uses a 2-to-1 ratio of sand to salt, meaning there will be approximately 800 tons of sand in stock this winter as well. Buyert adds that last winter when salt supplies were low, it was going at a rate of $120 to $150 per ton. He says this year the city has locked in a rate of $69 per ton for the winter order.
