The Iowa Department Of Transportation, or DOT, is considering closing the Mile Long Bridge anytime there are sustained winds exceeding 50 m.p.h. Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat told KNIA/KRLS News earlier this week that the DOT met with area law enforcement, first responders and road crews to discuss the possible new high-wind protocol. Goemaat says it’s not uncommon to have high winds after a snow storm, and there would be concern with the amount of traffic diverted on county roads if the bridge was closed. Goemaat says no formal action has been taken yet, and a bridge study is currently being done before more information will be known.
