The top two teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference go head to head tonight on the volleyball court…if that’s not exciting enough, those teams just happen to be Pella and Pella Christian and they’ll meet tonight at Pella High School. For Pella Christian this marks their final conference game and coach John Evenhouse says his main concern is his team’s mental focus. With a win, the Eagles will do no worse than tie for the conference title, and Evenhouse wants his team to maintain that focus. “We have nothing to lose but everthing to gain so there’s no use being nervous, you just go out and play as hard as you can, shake off errors and be at the top of your game” The Eagles could even win the title outright if Pella would drop one of their final two remaining conference matches next week. Pella meanwhile comes in on fire. The Lady Dutch are ranked 5th in Class 3A, and are fresh off a championship at the Newton tournament Saturday and a sweep of Knoxville Tuesday. Coach Bob Fessler says he always looks forward to playing Pella Christian because he knows they’ll push his girls and give them a great challenge. “It’s so much fun, I respect the heck out of their program and coach and I think when we get together and play great things happen. It’s a great opportunity for the community of Pella to see some great high school volleyball”. Fessler says the type of atmosphere that the rivalry brings is exactly what they need at this time of the season.
” A couple weeks out from districts we wanna be playing in front of bigger crowds and with that type of intensity. Those are things we’re looking for now in matches so we can see how our kids perform under pressure. We’ve prepared well and I think our kids will be ready for the challenge of the nervousness and excitement this match creates”. Pella is 24-4 on the season and 4-0 in the LHC while Pella Christian is 13-9 overall and 5-1 in the LHC. Freshman and JV matches start at 5:30pm with the varsity starting around 7:30pm at Pella High School.
