Pella once again dug deep and made plays when it mattered most to upset 4th ranked Centerville 24-20 in the Class 3A quarterfinals last night and earned their second straight trip to the UNI Dome to play in the Class 3A Semifinals. Centerville’s Tanner Susin scored his first of three touchdowns on the Big Red’s opening possession breaking a 43 yard run to put Centerville on top early 7-0. Pella got on the board with a 38 yard field goal by Blaine Forsythe but trailed 7-3 after one quarter. After back to back penalties backed Centerville up inside their own 10 yard line, Spencer Boeyink intercepted a pass in the second quarter and took it 29 yards for a touchdown putting Pella on top 10-7. Pella coach Jay Mckinstrey says that was a huge play for Pella’s confidence. Susin would score again just before halftime but the PAT was no good and Centerville led 13-10 at halftime. Pella’s defense came up big again with a 4th down stop midway through the third quarter and the Pella offense converted as Matt Meyers scored on a two yard scamper to put Pella back on top. Mckinstrey says that was another big game changing moment. Centerville re gained the lead on Susin’s third touchdown of the game with 6:42 to play but again Pella drove down the field and perhaps the play of the game came on a huge third down catch by Ryan Lanke which set up Pella’s last touchdown. Mckinstrey says without that play the outcome may have been different. That led to Meyers second touchdown, a two yard run with 2:33 to ice the win for Pella. Pella was out gained by nearly 200 yards in total offense but still found a way to win and Mckinstrey says that’s what championship teams are made of. Pella now will face New Hampton in the Class 3A Semi finals Monday November 16th at 7:30pm at the UNI Dome.
