A 20-acre abandoned mine site southeast of Knoxville will start being cleaned up with a groundbreaking ceremony November 30 at 1:30 p.m. That’s according to Jay Jung with the Marion County Natural Resources Conservation Service. He says the federally-funded project for the mine-which is located near Old highway 92 and T-17 – will eliminate acid mine drainage caused by erosion of the spoil material, eliminate dangerous conditions posed by the high walls, and reduce water pollution from the site.
