A committee of Marion County residents and other partners are working to revive a Lake Red Rock campground, especially for campers and paddlers. The committee is fixing up the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp as the lake’s first public site for primitive camping. Earlier this month Central College biology professor Russ Benedict and his students were at Hickory Ridge. Benedict says the campground has significant biological value for students to learn about the environment and how to care for area land. The project is a partnership between the Red Rock Lake Association, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and pledges are still needed. To pledge or for more information, call Anita at 515-288-1846.
