Monday is National Dutch American Heritage Day, and the Pella Historical Society will be hosting an event later this week to commemorate the history and heritage of the community. The event will include a meal consisting of some Dutch soups, saucijzebroodjes – or “pigs-in-a-blanket” – a relish tray and dessert, along with a program. Bonnie Verberg, Director of the Vermeer Mill and Pella Historical says the program will include three parts.

“The program’s going to be a really fun thing this year. We’re going to have the Duchesses come and teach us that new dance that everybody’s supposed to be learning for the 75th Tulip Time celebration. We’ll also have some Dutch songs that we’ll sing, and then Dr. Ron Rietveld will be talking about Pella and the Dutch before they came to America.”

The Dutch American Heritage Day Event will be held on Friday in the Pella Community Center, with dinner starting at 6:00 p.m., and the program at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and $25 for families with younger children, and are available at the Pella Historical Business Office on Franklin Street.
