Rural Pella Light Display Open to Public

A local attraction in the Pella area could be the ideal source of evening entertainment for those with family and friends visiting for the holiday weekend. “Dutch Christmas in the Country,” a holiday light display set up at the home of John and Birdie DeVries started lighting up nightly earlier this week.

The display covers 2 ½ acres with approximately 57,000 Christmas lights, including candles, angels, and a lighted Dutch village – all set to the sounds of praise music. John DeVries, who started the tradition 17 years ago, says lighted ships on one of the ponds on the property is a crowd-pleaser among the attraction’s younger viewers.

“I would say about 80 to 90 percent of the time the kids like the ships, and I think that’s probably because you don’t see ships in this part of the country, other than tour boats or whatever you would find on Lake Red Rock,” says DeVries.

The display turns on at 5:15 p.m. nightly and remains on until 10:30 p.m. “Dutch Christmas in the Country” is located approximately 1 mile northwest of Pella at 669 210th Avenue. Signs on Washington Street and Highway 163 help guide visitors to the attraction.
