Today is Veterans Day, and the public is invited to a dedication of a newly-refurbished Knoxville landmark at 12 p.m. Wednesday on the northeast corner of the square.  Knoxville resident and American Legion member Conrad Nelson says the cannon on Knoxville’s square received a new a shine and coat of paint from Weiler Industries in June.  A memorial plaque on the cannon says the U.S. Army shipped the cannon to Knoxville to replace a Civil War cannon which was retired in 1902.  Nelson says the event will also honor those who have defended the country in past and present conflicts.

Also today all postal service and non-essential county operations are closed, set to reopen with usual hours Thursday.

Yesterday, about two dozen Marion County residents raised flags for the Avenue of Flags event at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville, in honor of our veterans.  The group encourages residents to stop by the cemetery and pay their respects.  The Avenue of Flags will continue until 3 p.m. Thursday.
