Discussion on the condition of Pella’s indoor swimming pool will continue at the council’s next meeting. The council is considering an assessment of the structure that would give them information on the potential costs to repair the 33-year-old facility.

“Obviously when you talk about high-dollar items, it’s always wise to go in with a sound financial plan before you do this. Particularly, areas of concern are some of the heating and ventilation system of the pool and also the roof,” says Pella City Administrator Mike Nardini. “Those are going to be big ticket items, and the purpose of the assessment is to simply identify the needed capital improvements of the pool – get those cost estimates down – and then realistically take a look at how much it’s going to cost to upgrade the pool versus what it would cost to build a new indoor pool.”

Nardini says the cost of the assessment would likely be around $20,000, which is less than one-half percent of the value of the three to four million dollar facility. The council is expected to discuss the issue further at their upcoming meeting.
