Former Pella High School Track and Field standout Brooke Gritters has taken her talents to the NCAA Division 1 level at Oklahoma State University. Gritters is currently a freshman at Oklahoma State and is redshirting her freshman year. She says when she first found out she’d be red shirting she wasn’t too enthused but has since learned it is the best decision for her for several reasons. She says she has switched forms and is now using the spin in both her shotput and discus throws and this extra year will giver her time to get used to that, she also says she’ll be able to try the hammer throw, weight throw and javellin which are all new for her. She says more importantly it gives her time to adjust to college and the extra year will open up some opportuinities for her on the education side of things as well. She says with some of the new techniques she’s learned and weight training, already she’s added thirty feet to her discus throws in practice. She says she will be allowed to compete in a limited number of meets as an independant this year and one goal she has is qualifying for the 2010 Drake Relays. Gritters was a three time Class 3A State champion while at Pella High School and she also won an indoor State Track and Field championship as well.
