Mine Groundbreaking Ceremony Held Yesterday

Representatives from the Red Rock Environmental Education Foundation, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, and the Natural Resources conservation service were present at a groundbreaking ceremony for a 20-acre abandoned mine site southeast of Knoxville Monday. Todd Coffelt, chief of the state Mines and Minerals Bureau, says the federally-funded project for the mine-which is located near Old Highway 92 and T-17 – will cost approximately $400,000, and will eliminate acid mine drainage caused by erosion of the spoil material, eliminate dangerous conditions posed by the high walls, and reduce water pollution from the site. Groundbreaking work is set to begin in the next few weeks.
