The Pella Christian boys had four players in double figures and didn’t show any letdown after graduating all five starters from last years team in a 77-55 rout at South Tama in their season opener last night. In a fast paced first haf the Eagles led 23-19 after one quarter but really blew the game open with a 22-8 run in the second quarter to earn a 45-27 halftime lead. They didn’t cool down much at halftime as they outscored the Trojans 21-10 in the third quarter on their way to the win. Coach Larry Hessing said they had a lot of holes to fill after last season coming in, but he knew this team was capable of good things and it was good to see it show last night. He says they have a lot of guys that can score at different times and that balance showed last night. The Eagles were led by Kyle Nikkel with 22 points, Jon Holwerda had 18 including three three pointers, Curtis Rozenboom added 13 off the bench and Alex Branderhorst scored 10 to go along with Chase Carlson’s eight points. Hessing also noted he was very pleased with how point guard Sam Twedt led the team very well and says he showed a lot of leadership especially late in the game. The Eagles are 1-0 on the season and in the LHC.. They play at PCM tomorrow night then at Balard Monday and at Knoxville Tuesday
