One area of focus for the Pella Christian boys over the holiday break is on their defense. Due to weather and games the Eagles had limited practice time during the first half of the season and as a result were forced to keep their defense fairly basic running mostly half court defensive sets. Coach Larry Hessing says with this extended period of practice time they are working on getting back to being able to run more of a full court style of defense which will allow them to be more aggressive on the defensive end. He says it will take some time to develop but he’s been happy with how the kids have picked up on what they’re trying to do so far and he says once they get Cole Warner back from injury, which should be sometime in January, that will give them another weapon to use. The Eagles plan to compete in several scrimmages tomorrow (Thursday) against some tough competition including Ballard, Urbandale and North Polk which Hessing says will allow them to work on some of these things in a game like setting and help prepare them for the resumption of their season when they host Grinnell Tuesday.
