More than a week before Christmas, law enforcement agencies across the state began stepping up traffic enforcement to help ensure a safe holiday season. Nearly 300 Iowa law enforcement agencies are participating in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program or “STEP” wave, including the Pella Police Department. Lieutenant John VanHaaften says the program allows more officers to keep streets and highways safe.

“Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau funding allows for overtime for our officers to not only do the regular enforcement, but to step up our manpower just a bit and give a focus – and this time of year a big focus is impaired drivers” says VanHaaften.

VanHaaften adds that the statewide STEP wave began on December 16th and will last through January 3rd.
