The Pella wrestling team is coming along according to second year head coach and former Pella wrestler Joe Burch. The Little Dutch were supposed to start their season with a dual meet at South Tama tonight, however that meet has been postponed to January 5th. Burch says most of the upperclassmen got a very late start due to the long football season and just need a little extra time to get to their preferred weights and get in wrestling shape. Burch says they hope to fill their entire lineup this year and not have to give up points due to open weight classes. He says as far as their line up goes, he’s still unsure as to who will fill some of the lower weight classes as several freshman are battling for those positions, but the middle and upper weights return a lot of experience and should be very tough. Burch says Senior Brent Smith, a former state qualifier will also be tough at 135 pounds. He says if the freshman can score some points and get some wins at the lower weights they should be very competitive top to bottom this season. Pella opens their season at the Dallas Center Grimes tournament Saturday.
