Though street maintenance trucks in the city of Pella have been extremely busy in the past 24-plus hours, the winter storm has made little impact on the city’s sand and salt supply. Pella Public works director Denny Buyert says the combination of high winds and low temperatures minimizes the effectiveness of salt or sand, so little has been used. Buyert says some sand has been used at busy intersections, but says salt is only effective if the temperature is at or above the upper teens to low 20s.
