To wrestle at the varsity level as a freshman is never an easy task, especially in the tough Little Hawkeye Conference. This year the Pella wrestling team has several freshman and sophomores doing just that. Coach Joe Burch says that’s a tough thing to ask of any freshman but due to lack of numbers of upper classmen in their line up that’s what they have to do this year and they’re making the most of it so far. Burch says the young guys are making progress each time they step on the mats and he continues to be pleased with their efforts. He says there are goods and bads about wrestling varsity as a freshman. It’s tough now wrestling against mostly upper classmen, but if they stay with it the experience they gain will pay off when they are juniors and seniors. Lane Whitaker, Houston Naakpeboren, David Wylie, Kyle Langstraat, and Christian Stafford are some of the freshman in the varsity lineup that Burch has been pleased with so far. Pella returns to action January 5th when they travel to South Tama.
