The spring sports seasons are just around the corner – with some beginning official practices as soon as next week – and the athletic programs at Pella Christian High School appear positioned to have another active spring. Pella Christian High School Athletic Director Verlan Nikkel says participation numbers look good again this season, adding that it’s common for the number of athletes out for both boys and girls programs in four sports to ebb and flow.

“It just kind of varies,” says Nikkel. “It’s always interesting when you get a new freshman class come in, [to see] where those kids are going to go to if they’re going to play a sport. Really, that determines a lot, as far as what your numbers are going to be in a sport from year to year.”

Nikkel says he was surprised to see a lower number of boys sign up for soccer this spring, but adds that he’s happy to see increases in the number of students out for both girls and boys track and the boys golf team, while the other sports held relatively steady in the number of participants from last spring to this year.

Even with spring break next week, some programs at Pella Christian High School will start go ahead and start official practices, with the rest of the teams officially beginning the week of March 22nd.
