Undeterred by steady showers, Central College’s Justin Smool turned in a 1-under-par 71 and grabbed the first-round lead at the Iowa Conference men’s golf tournament yesterday. There’s a familiar face in pursuit. Buena Vista’s Jaron Smool, his younger brother, is tied for second with 74 on the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course. Central and Buena Vista share first place in the team standings at 308 in the 72-hole tournament. Luther follows at 314 with Wartburg at 317. The tourney continues at Finkbine today with the final 36 holes set for the Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly next weekend. Central has claimed 27 league championships including two in the past three years.
