A dozen students from Pella Christian High School and one from Pella Community High School competed in the National History Day event earlier this week in Des Moines. Though none of the students from Pella schools were chosen to advance on to the national competition, Pella Christian junior Abigail Fincel was selected as one of four finalists in her category. Fincel’s project was on gyroscopes, and was titled “Gyroscopes: Navigating through History, and Guiding into the Future”.

Teacher Librarian Sheri Haveman, who advised the students from Pella Christian, said her students enjoyed the experience and and said it was good to see how tough the state level of the competition was. She adds that her students enjoyed seeing what other students around the state were working on and how much time they put in.

This year’s National History Day theme was “Innovation in History: Impact and Change,” and was chosen by a national panel.
