A dual between two of the top pitchers in the league resulted in a split between the Central College softball team and Coe College in Cedar Rapids on Saturday. The Dutch opened Iowa Conference play with a 3-0 win over the Kohawks that was highlighted by a two-hit, seven strikeout performance in the circle by pitcher Kiley Lythberg .
Offensively, the Dutch started the game by forcing Coe’s Ashley Simon to throw 46 pitches – giving up one hit and four walks in a one-run inning. Afton Nelson led the way for the Dutch at the plate, as her spot in the batting line-up generated all three runs for Central, as she walked twice and singled once. Additionally, Katie Tenboer hit for a single and a double, as the Dutch won with just 3 hits.
In the second-game of the doubleheader, Coe’s ace regained her prowess in the circle, striking out seven Central batters and again holding the Dutch to just three hits in a 4-1 loss. With the split, seventh-ranked Central is now 15-6 overall.
