Friday is the final chance for area residents to officially be a part of a record-breaking event at next week’s Tulip Time festival in Pella. So far, the number of registrants well exceeds the existing record for Dutch dancers in wooden shoes, but organizers are hoping to set a truly impressive benchmark for the 75th anniversary of Tulip Time.
Bonnie Verberg, Director of the Vermeer Mill and Pella Historical says there is a lot of buzz surrounding the record-breaking opportunity.
“I had some fifth grade kids in the other day from Pella Community Schools, and many of those children had signed up and many more were planning to,” said Verberg. “Yes, I think there’s a lot of excitement. When else do you get a chance to get your name in the Guinness Book of World Records?”
To register before Friday’s deadline, visit www.PellaTulipTime.com, or stop by the Vermeer Mill Interpretive Center during business hours to sign up.

While the ideal peak for the tulip blossoms in Pella would be right during next week’s Tulip Time festival, the early blooms this spring have created an economic windfall for the community.
“When they [the tulips] do bloom early, it’s very good for our economy, and good for the community,” said Karen Eischen, Executive Director of the Pella Chamber of Commerce. “If anybody was out-and-about the last couple of weeks – specifically last weekend – you could just see the tourists come in, come in early and have the opportunity to shop and really extend that ‘Tulip Time season’ – as we like to call it – out to three or four weeks. That’s a great thing for our economy.”
Eischen says Pella business owners are preparing for what they anticipate will be an incredibly busy few days, as this year’s 75th Annual Tulip Time festival is expected to be the largest ever.
