State lawmakers recently passed a piece of gun legislation that will affect some of the requirements and training necessary to own a gun in the state of Iowa. Sheriff Ron Goemaat says there will be a few changes in Marion County including permits being valid for 5 years, and gun owners being required to go through additional training in order to be able to renew their license. With the current law, licenses are good for one year periods and owners are not required to go through additional training once the initial license is issued. Goemaat says it’s unclear as to when the new law will be implemented, but anticipates that it will be later this year or early 2011.
