Just a week after suffering an 8-1 defeat at Cornell College, the shorthanded Central College men’s tennis team pulled a remarkable turnaround to topple the Rams, 5-4, in the opening round of the Iowa Conference men’s tennis tournament Thursday. Sixth-seeded Central then was blanked by second seeded Coe, 5-0 in the semifinals, and dropped the third-place match to fourth seeded Wartburg, 5-1 to finish in fourth place.

The Dutch were without their number one player Luke Boyd and number six player Nick Schnicker who were both out due to illness and their number two player Seth Harris was playing injured and picked up a three set win in the Cornell match. It was one of four three-set singles victories for the Dutch over Cornell. Dan Bowser and Jacob Dreyer also picked up three set wins and with the match even at 4-4, Bryn Boswell a freshman from Pella , got a four set victory at number four singles to ice the match win.

While Central concludes its spring dual campaign with an 11-13 mark, the Dutch still have some individual play remaining. The flighted conference singles and doubles tournament will be staged Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
