With help from a community-based charitable organization, Pella Regional Health Center is providing a program that comforts families who have experienced the death of an infant child. The “Empty Cradle” program received a $1300 grant from the Pella Community Foundation to help create Keepsake Boxes for families that have lost a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth or early infant death. “Empty Cradle” provides a variety of support and assistance services, including the Keepsake Box, which includes poems, a memory book and a blanket, among other items.

The Empty Cradle coordinators work with grieving families for at least one year. They provide support and assistance, newsletters, cards on special days, connections with other families and a keepsake box. The program serves approximately 35 local families each year. Referrals can be made to the Empty Cradle program by contacting Heather Vander Beek at 641-621-2351.
