The Pella Boys Track team completed an undefeated season by winning the Class 3A District Track Meet at South Tama last night with 159 points compared to second place Vinton Shellsburg’s 113 and tied a school record by qualifying 15 events for next week’s State Track and Field Meet. Knoxville finished third and qualified eight events for state.

For Pella, Brett Bogaard qualified in both the 100 and 200 and Zach Wittenberg qualified in the 1600 and 3200. Other state qualifiers for the Little Dutch include Aaron Mason in the high jump, Matt Meyers in the long jump, Austin King and Grant Gustafson in the 400, Chris Meyers and Taylor Cox in the 400 hurdles, Richie Bales in the 800, as well as their 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relay teams. The top three finishers in each event qualified for state and Pella coach Brent Van Hauen says they’re very happy to qualify 15 events but notes they also had several near misses with five fourth place finishes and a second place finish that resulted in a controversial DQ. He says they have a goal of finishing in the top five as a team in the Class 3A State meet and bringing home several medals.

Knoxville’s state qualifiers include Colton Spaur in the 200, Harlan Sytsma in the 400, Alex Edwards in the 800, Ty Dunkin in the shotput and their 4×100, 4×400, 4×800 and distance medley relay teams.

The State Co-Ed Track and Field Meet gets underway Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines
