Work Begins Today on Pella Sewer Project

Work crews are expected to begin removing pavement from a Pella Street Thursday to begin work on a sewer repair project. The 1100 block of Marion Street was closed earlier this week, and hopes are for the project to begin soon.
“The sewer subcontractor hopes to start in Monday. Of course that’s always subject to weather, but we’re anxious to get the project going” says Pella Public Works Director Denny Buyert. “We have some trunk sewer through that area that potentially could collapse, and that’s why we’re there.”
Buyert says there will actually be two separate contracts on the sewer repair project.
“From Lincoln to Jefferson Street is about a 600 foot stretch, but there are a couple of stretches that we’ve televised that are in really poor condition, and really concern us that they could collapse at any point,” said Buyert. “They were not good candidates to line, so we’re digging down and fixing those stretches. Then with a subsequent contract, we’ll come back and then line the entire 600 feet; once we’ve completed the full repairs and paved the street back.”
The Pella Public Works Department says the project will likely keep Marion Street between Lincoln and Jefferson Streets closed through the end of June.
