In an effort to reduce head-on collisions on Iowa highways, the Iowa Department of Transportation is implementing a statewide program to put rumble strips down the center lines of the roadway. State Safety Engineer Tom Welch tells KNIA/KRLS News that Highways 5, 14 and 92 in Marion County are all candidates for the center line rumble strips, which will be phased in over 15 years as roads are resurfaced.
Welch adds that the safety features could be installed on existing pavement if an above normal amount of head-on collisions have occurred on a particular stretch of road, and if the condition of the pavement would not be compromised. The cost of adding the rumble strips to the center of the roadway costs roughly $1000 per mile. Decisions will be made later this fall on which stretches of Iowa highways will have the rumble strips added first.
