With warm weather seemingly here to stay, its important to remember to not forget about helping protect our pets and animals from the heat as we retreat into our air conditioned homes. Dr. Glenda VanWyk with Tri-County Veterinary Clinic in Pella says our animals have two essential needs in warm weather.

“Basically the main ones are: provide some sort of shelter or shade for your animal if they’re going to be outside for a long period of time,” says Dr. VanWyk, “and another big one is to ALWAYS let them have water when they’re outside.”

She adds that a little empathy goes a long way as well when taking care of animals.

“Kind of put yourself in their shoes, and if you’re outside and you’re getting hot in a short amount of time, then it’s pretty much the same for them.”
