The Pella baseball team hit a snag in Newton last night, as the Little Dutch fell 9-8 to the Cardinals. The game was moved from Pella after rainfall in the late morning left Pella’s field unplayable.

The Little Dutch got out to an early 2-0 lead through four innings, before Newton picked up its first run in the fifth inning. It was at that point that things began to unravel for Pella, as Newton racked up eight runs between the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-2 lead in the game.

Playing as the home team still, the Little Dutch made a last-ditch effort at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell just short with a six-run rally that left the final score at 9-8.

Despite the loss, the Little Dutch performed well at the plate, with five players batting .500 in the loss, led by Brett Kingery and Schyler Kane, who each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. All eight of Pella’s runs were scored by a different player.

The loss drops Pella to 6-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference, with a Varsity doubleheader at Norwalk on Wednesday up next on the schedule.
