Pella Christian’s Van Sant Shines in Saturday’s Games in Oskaloosa

The Pella Christian softball team split a pair of games Saturday in tournament play at Oskaloosa. The Lady Eagles made quick work of Eddyville-Blakesburg in their first contest of the day, ripping the Rockets 14-1 in four innings of work. Pella Christian led 5-0 going into the fourth inning, then exploded four nine runs to put the game away for good.

Lead-off batter Heather Van Sant was perfect at the plate for the Lady Eagles, hitting a single in all four of her at bats and scoring four runs, while stealing two bases. Sami Veenstra also had a strong performance at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and batting in three runs. Paige Blom was solid in the pitcher’s circle for Pella Christian, allowing just two hits, striking out seven and giving up no walks.

The Lady Eagles found themselves in a much tighter game for their second contest of the day, as they faced Davenport West. Neither team put a run on the board until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Falcons put up all three of their runs, en route to a 3-1 victory.

Heather Van Sant was again outstanding at the plate for Pella Christian, as she went 2-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the Lady Eagles, who scored their only run in the top of the seventh inning, after pitcher Paige Blom drew a walk. Blom also pitched well against Davenport West, striking out ten batters while walking three and giving up no earned runs.

With the two-game split, the Pella Christian softball team is now 11-6 overall and off until Wednesday, when they host Knoxville.
