It was a rough day for the Pella girls tennis team at the Class 1-A Individual State Tennis Tournament in Iowa City. The Lady Dutch doubles team of Marah Bossard and Nicole Oliver was defeated 6-3, 6-0 by a duo from Waterloo Columbus, and then downed 6-4, 6-3, and eliminated in the consolation bracket by a doubles team from Red Oak.

Singles play didn’t fare any better for Pella, as Hillary Nossaman fell 6-1, 6-0 to Celia Morton of Dubuque Wahlert in the opening round. That sent Nossaman into a consolation bracket, where she faced Ellen Chalstrom from Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Hillary will eliminated by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

The losses at the State Tournament also marked the end of the season for Head Coach Margene VanHorn, who is retiring after 33 years of coaching tennis at Pella High School. VanHorn said afterwards she wanted to thank all of the girls that played under her in her time as a coach, as they made it a fun and rewarding experience; and said she will miss tennis tremendously.
