Though it seems unlikely that the two would go together, the month of July has been both hotter and wetter than normal. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says while not quite as rainy as June was, July has certainly seen more precipitation than usual.

“June was an incredibly wet month – the wettest June on record in Iowa – but July has been fairly wet as well, and also a bit on the warm side. It’s been 1.2 degrees above normal so far in the month of July for temperatures,” says Hillaker.

“This will be our fifth consecutive warmer-than-normal month in the state after having a rather cold winter. Rainfall-wise, though, June and July have been the really wet months on a statewide basis, although May was quite wet in the southeastern part of the state as well.”

Hillaker says that the average total amount of rainfall received in the state in the month of July is typically around 4.25 inches – adding that Marion County and much of the rest of state is already well ahead of that pace.
