After causing one minor accident and plenty of concern, over a dozen cattle that had gotten loose near Highway 163, west of Pella, have been corralled. The cattle, which belong to Rich Meinders, apparently got loose sometime Sunday evening, as the call log at the Pella Police Department fielded the first report of cattle on Highway 163 at 9:14 p.m. Sunday.
A single-vehicle accident with no injuries occurred early Monday morning near LDJ Manufacturing, when a car struck one of the cattle. By Monday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Transportation had placed warning signs between mile markers 36 and 40, warning motorists of the hazard.
With the aid of a helicopter to locate the cattle in the tall corn, the last of the sixteen total animals were eventually located before 9:00 p.m. Monday night.
