The Pella Historical Society is hosting another of its summer events Wednesday at the former home of Pella’s founder. Scholte Fun Days will invite around 30 students in third grade or older to the Scholte House for a morning of what will literally be old-fashioned fun. Scholte House Director Beverly Graves says the event is meant to be fun, but also provides a learning experience for the children who participate.
“We want them to experience what life was like in the 1800s when the Dominie and Mareah came here and built this house,” said Graves. “We want them to come into the house, meet Mareah, take a tour of the house – with Mareah – and then learn a little bit about the artifacts and history and things that Mareah and the Dominie shared while they were in Pella.”
Graves herself dresses in period clothing and portrays Mareah Scholte for the event. Activities at the historic home of Dominie Scholte will include games such as jacks, marbles and bobbing for apples, as well as a chance to engage in activities that fit the period, including churning butter. Graves says information on the historic site is also sent home with the children to encourage their parents and family members to visit the home as well.
“I’m always surprised how many people who’ve lived in Pella for twenty, thirty years and have never come through Scholte House,” said Graves. “As the new director, that’s going to be one of my goals is to get more information out there so people want to come and see that it’s a beautiful place; and its a treasure that we have here.”
The Scholte House is located on Washington Street on the north side of the square in Pella. Scholte Fun Day is taking place from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
