Unranked, seventh seeded PCM gave third ranked, second seeded Davis County everything they could handle but came up just short falling 2-1 in the opening round of the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament last night at Principal Park, as both teams were making their state tournament debuts.

The game was scoreless through five innings as both teams combined for just three hits at that point. PCM plated the first run in the top of the sixth when Kody Wilkie led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a sacrifice by Hutch Burns. Being aggressive, Wilkie chose to keep going and test the defense, which proved to be the right decision as he advanced to third, then scored on a throwing error. Davis County answered with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth. PCM couldn’t answer in the top half of the seventh as they were retired in order with a flyout and two groundouts . PCM pitcher Kurt Timmons, pitching in relief of starter Joel Wiggins, struggled in the bottom of the seventh walking the first two batters. After retiring the next two batters, Timmons walked another, loading the bases with two outs. The game appeared to be heading for extra innings as Davis County’s Colton Matthews hit a fly ball to right field, however PCM right fielder Kaleb Wilkie’s attempt at a sliding catch popped out of his glove and the winning run crossed the plate for Davis County.

Timmons took the loss for PCM pitching the final 1.1 innings. Joel Wiggins started the game and pitched very well going 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out seven and walking two. Calvin Matthews pitched the distance for Davis County allowing just one hit while striking out ten and walking only one.

PCM ends their season 16-12 overall and loses just two seniors from this years team Joe Gilson and Drew Lyons.
