As corn crops grow higher, motorists are urged to use extra caution as their views could be obstructed. Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat encourages drivers to come to a complete stop, or slow down as they approach intersections and railroad crossings. Goemaat says it is not uncommon for there to be accidents this time of year due to the decreased visibility at intersections where corn is growing close to the roadways. He asks that all motorists make sure to slow down and take a good look both ways before crossing these intersections.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation there were a total of 48 crashes in 2009 at rural intersections due to obstructed views from crops and trees. The crashes resulted in four fatalities and at least 49 injuries.
