An event held at the Pella Aquatic Center by a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes turned tragic Wednesday night, when two missing campers were found lying on the bottom of the pool.
Attempts to revive 14-year-old Gael Chrispin and 15-year-old Nehmson Sanon were unsuccesful, and the boys were later pronounced dead at Pella Regional Health Center. Both were from the Kansas City area and were in Pella for a camp being held by the Central Western Iowa Des Moines Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Central College.
FCA Executive Vice President Tom Rogeburg called the accident “the worst tragedy in 54 years of FCA camps.” A statement released Saturday by Pella Mayor Darrell Dobernecker extended condolences to the families and friends of both young men and requested support for all of those directly involved.
The Pella Aquatic Center remains closed until further notice.
