Central Coach Hopes Wrestlers Gain Appreciation for the Sport as Camp Concludes

A three-day wrestling camp at Central College for students ranging from first to twelfth grades will conclude this evening. Led by Central College Head Wrestling Coach Eric Van Kley and his assistant coaches – as well as a handful of Central Wrestlers – the camp has emphasized learning the rules, strategy and techniques involved in wrestling; in an atmosphere intended to make the camp fun.

Van Kley says he hopes those who have attended the camp will leave with a better understanding and appreciation of the sport, something he says is not always easy to find elsewhere, like in other sports.

“Different than football or basketball that you can watch on TV and there’s an understanding of it, [with] wrestling there’s an education that goes with it,” says Van Kley. “I think, more than anything, if we can teach them that it’s a fun sport, it’s a rewarding sport, [and] you don’t have to be a certain size or shape to really appreciate the sport – then it’s worthwhile for us.”

The wrestling camp at Central College is among the last in a series of summer camps that the college has hosted in nearly every sport offered at the high school level.
