There is a house sliding into a tributary of Lake Red Rock, and three more in the county are at risk, says Marion County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Anderson. He says he was first notified of the situation last Wednesday by an anonymous third party.

Anderson says they immediately met with the homeowners and pulled together volunteer resources. Safe Guard Iowa came to assist the residents and called upon Pella Corporation, Vermeer and the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Group to help with the efforts. Also assisting at the scene were the Mahaska County Emergency Management Office, Oskaloosa Fire Department, Knoxville Fire and Rescue and the Knoxville Rural Fire Department was on standby in case extra help was needed. The volunteers worked together to move the family’s possessions into storage for safe keeping.

Anderson says that the sliding of the house was due in part to the constant heavy rains that we have had this summer. He reports that an engineer has said that the house can not be stabilized and it will be demolished before it can slide into the water. The Red Cross has been assisting the family to find temporary shelter. Anderson says that FEMA should be able to help the displaced family recover as well.

The homeowner wishes to remain anonymous.
