Area residents who live or work in counties that were recently declared as disaster areas may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits under the federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance program. The affected area includes Marion County, and local residents who have lost their job as a result of this summer’s severe weather should apply for federal benefits.

The benefits cover self-employed workers that are not usually entitled to unemployment insurance, including Iowa farmers. Those applying for the assistance will need to provide proof of past earnings at the time they file their claim. Claims can be filed through any Iowa Workforce Development Center, including the one in Pella, which can be reached at 641-628-4511. Iowa Workforce Development also has nearby offices in Oskaloosa and Newton.

Claims need to be filed by September 17th.
