Pella High scored on their opening possession and never trailed in a successful season opener at Newton last night winning 35-14.

After the Little Dutch defense held Newton to three and out on their first possession, a short punt gave Pella the football at the Newton 41 yard line and two plays later Deckar Lunch broke loose for his first of three touchdowns on the night, a 30 yard run. Newton tied the game midway through the second quarter following an interception and big return that took them down to Pella’s 15 yard line, setting up a touchdown a couple plays later, but Pella re gained the momentum with just under a minute to go in the half when Sam Davis completed a 68 yard drive with a 13 yard touchdown run. The PAT was blocked and Pella led 13-7 at halftime.

The second half was all Pella as again they scored on their opening possession with a 3 yard run by Grant Gustaffson, then added another third quarter score on a 25 yard run by Lynch that followed a fumble recovery by Alan Pfadenhauer. The icing on the cake came in the fourth quarter when Pella got a safety following a bad snap on a Newton punt attempt, then on the ensuing kickoff Lynch broke loose for a 69 yard touchdown return. Pella coach Jay Mckinstrey said afterwards he was very pleased with their intensity and focus throughout the game.

Pella returns five starters on defense this year, and Mckinstrey says they did a great job all night stopping Newton and winning the battle of field position:

Pella racked up 332 yards total offense including 267 on the ground led by Lynch with 113 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns and quarterback Teag Klyn, in his first varsity start was 7-13 for 65 yards with an interception, he also rushed for 40 yards.
