While many buildings across the county have experienced water damage this spring and summer, a thorough homeowners insurance review is recommended. Dan McKay from McKay Insurance in Knoxville says most of the flooding he has seen in the area would not be covered by the flood policy issued through the federal government. He says many of his clients have opted to carry the optional back up of sewers and drains coverage that includes a limited amount, usually $5,000, but does not cover water that would seep in from windows, doors or the foundation. McKay says many companies have suspended the ability to add this option until the weather conditions improve but his best recommendation is to contact your homeowner’s insurance agent and have them carefully review your situation and coverage.
