Softball camps for middle school and high school-aged girls are underway at Central College. Running simultaneously, the commuter camp and overnight camp each offer campers individual attention at the position of their choice from the camp’s instructors; which include Central Head Softball Coach George Wares. Wares says while the camp certainly gives instruction on the mechanics of the game, it also focuses on other aspects of softball.

“We try to make it a little bit different – and I think any camp can offer hitting and pitching and different position play – but in addition to that we try to add a lot of things that I think are missing in sports,” says Wares.

“We talk a lot about attitude. We talk about playing on a team that is successful, a team that’s not successful, or playing on a team where you maybe struggle to get along. Hopefully we can give them some ideas about what they can take back to their team and their coaches that might help some of those team chemistry-type issues.”

Around 85 girls are attending the camps, and with 20 instructors on the camp staff, it gives the athletes a lot of one-on-one time with coaches, as well as former and current Central College players. Both camps will continue through the rest of the week at Central College in Pella.
