Two Knoxville men were honored recently for their courage and self-sacrifice with 2009 Governor’s Lifesaving Awards. On a cold day in December of 2009, Tony Gerdom and Bryan Ford Jr. noticed that a vehicle had entered a pond in Knoxville and rushed to assist at the scene. The two men broke through the vehicle and were able to rescue driver Kathleen VanSteenWyk, who was trapped inside after the cold water froze the locks and windows of her van. Ford and Gerdom were honored by Governor Chet Culver at the State Fair last week in the Lifesaving with Valor category which is awarded to individuals who, at their risk of their own life, attempt to save that of another person.
