Soggy ground near Sunken Gardens Park in Pella was swallowed up Tuesday, as a large sinkhole was reported in a flower bed near Main Street. Pella Public Works Director Denny Buyert says a number of sinkholes have shown up throughout the community this summer as a result of continuous rains. Buyert says leaks or bad joints in storm sewers are often the cause of the sinkholes. By Wednesday afternoon, the hole at Sunken Gardens Park had been filled and new plants installed as well.
