The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently conducted an investigation of the Knoxville Wastewater Treatment Plant after complaints were filed in regards to the transporting and application of sewage sludge that is spread on a piece of city owned land. The DNR submitted a report of investigation to the city late last week stating the city is in compliance with their requirements. The city is required to continue to monitor the situation and submit a written plan to ensure shift work is conducted by adequately certified staff. In addition, it has been recommended that they collect compliance sludge samples prior to each disposal event and ensure land application does not result in ponding.
