Early Crop Reports Show Yields are Down

According to Leslie Miller, an agricultural lender at Iowa State Savings Bank in Knoxville, early reports show that crop yields appear to be down this year. Miller says the heavy rains this spring and early summer caused shallow rooting of soybeans and with the lack of rain in August the roots weren’t deep enough to access necessary moisture. She says producers are reporting that while there are normally 3 beans to a pod, many of this year’s crops have only 2 beans and are smaller and lighter than normal. In addition, Miller says corn reports are not in yet for the Marion County area but reports in Northern Iowa show those yields are down as well.
