Upon receiving both written and verbal complaints from concerned Iowans, Senator Charles Grassley sent a letter to Eric K. Shinseki, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in regards to the grounds maintenance contracted awarded for mowing services for the VA campus in Knoxville. The letter, sent Wednesday, requests a briefing on the topic to better understand why a $871,000 contract was awarded when other local companies submitted bids for more than half a million dollars less. Grassley states that as a ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee it is his duty under the constitution to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and not subject to waste, fraud or abuse.
